Opal Reef
Dive Site: Barracuda Pass
Location: 16°30.194S 147°50.697E. Between south and main Opal Reefs
Visited By: Poseidon and Haba
Depth: 1-15 metres
Rating: Intermediate
Features:
  • There are numerous great dive sites including; Bashful Bommie, Ayer's Rock, SNO, Cathedrals, Split Bommie, Blue Buoy and One Fin Bommie
  • The tide brings lots of plankton attracting smaller fish, which in turn attract bigger fish
  • Look for sea cucumbers on the sandy floors
  • See the superb soft and hard coral and grazing fish
  • You may also see the occasional lagoon ray
  • As you get deeper see schools of paddletails, trevally mackerel, red bass and three species of barracuda move around slowly
  • See the resident blacktip reef shark
  • The nursery plate shelters a succession of juvenile whitetip reef sharks
  • Look for giant clams and titan triggerfish
